London Bridge is Falling Down
Dear Frankie,
I live in a condo on the sixteenth floor. My parents love where we live because they can see and hear the ocean and swim in our community pool.
Unfortunately, I saw on the news that an apartment building in Florida that looks a lot like ours collapsed. So many people, children, dogs, cats, birds, maybe even gerbils, got hurt and even worse than that.
My parents don’t seem concerned, but how do they know that our building won’t collapse?
Confused, Howie
Dear Howie,
Glad you wrote in about this Howie. The collapse of that building has been a concern for many dogs, cats, and, as you note, gerbils that live in high rises with swimming pools.
News of the collapse of that building was all over the news. People were horrified by the number of humans and animal lives that were affected. It’s a shame that it took an accident of this proportion before the owners of similar buildings got on the stick and brought in inspectors to check their facilities were structurally sound.
When they did inspect buildings like yours, they found most were safe and sound; few needed repairs. So, if you are wondering why your parents aren’t concerned, it’s likely that when they inspected your building, it passed all safety regulations with flying colors.
From your description of your condo, it sounds like you live in some fancy digs. If I were you, I would enjoy the view and the delicious smell of those ocean breezes.
Best, Frankie
