Everything is shut down. The governor of Massachusetts has ordered ALL non-essential businesses to close while the state and the country battle the COVID-19 virus.
Schools had already closed, and that means that many students who rely on school lunches and breakfasts were at risk of going hungry. Fairhaven and New Bedford started “Grab ’n Go” programs to get food to students who would normally get them at school.
In Fairhaven, meals are available to qualifying students Monday through Friday, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the front entrance of Elizabeth Hastings Middle School. Students receive a lunch for that day and a breakfast for the next morning. The school system has been giving out 125 meals each day.
Demi Fernandez was at EHMS on Friday, 3/20, and was grateful for the program.
“This has helped immensely,” she said “I’ve been here all three days.”
New Bedford is also offering the program. See page 8 for details. Acushnet students may access New Bedford’s program.
